Bedding

Small pets need the good kind of bedding to live happy. This bedding is there to absorb urine and faeces. It is also use for nest building. Here is the list of the different kind of bedding available on the market. Be aware that there is not yet any perfect bedding for gerbils, but a mix of some of them can give you good results. The bedding should be change at least once a month and not more then once every 2 weeks. If they are cleaned too often, they might loose their sent and forget who is their friend. This may cause unnecessary fights.

Bedding to avoid

Points meaning:

Odour: Capacity to absorb odours.

Phenol: Amount of phenol.

Dust: Amount of dust.

Comfort: the level of comfort for the gerbils and nest building.

Price: Does the price is high or not.

 

Bedding type
Corn Cob  4.1 / 5	It's very absorbant and eliminate almost all odour. But as it's made of corn, more exacly the center of it, gerbils can it eat which can cause degestive problems. I never had any for now. With this type of bedding, it's very important to change it every months. If not, amonia can be produce and breathing problems can occur. Pine 3,7 / 5	Yes but, this kind of bedding contains phenol, a natural bactericide product produced by all coniferous trees. This is very dangerous at long termes for small animals but even for us. It attacks the lungs and liver. If you can find on treated against phenol and vacuum-cleaned it's the best. Aspen 3,7 / 5	The aspen bedding is one of the most advised bedding by veterinary. It's a good material for nest construction and it's very soft. It is sometimes hard to find on the market and expensive.    The bad thing is that I discovered that some gerbils can be allergic to it. Alfalfa 2,8 / 5	Use this one only in extra. This is not a good type of bedding to be used alone. It becomes very smelly very fast. Yesterday's news (Cat-it)  2 / 5	Yes it's cat litter. This one is used when a cat come back from a surgery. There is no clay in it so no problems with that! Toilet paper 1,6 / 5	Use this only if your gerbils are allergic to everything. Use this only as a temporary bedding. It's very dusty and it must be changed every day because it become smelly very fast. But it's a good nest material. Odour: 0/5 Dust: 0/5 Comfort:5/5
Dirt and sand  1 / 5	This is one funny and interesting idea for gerbils. But keeping this bedding clean is difficult. Moulds and bacterias grow fast in there.    Odour: 0/5 Dust: 0/5 Comfort:3/5

 

 

 

To avoid completely

Cedar

Cedar, as most of coniferous trees (pine, spruce, fir tree) contains a molecul called Phenol.There is many types of phenol but the effets are mostly the same. We known for a long time now the antibacterial propriety of cedar. We even build cedar 

 

 

 ule volatile appelée "Phénol". Il y en a plusieurs types mais leurs effets sont généralement les mêmes. On connaît depuis longtemps les propriétés antiseptiques des conifères surtout le cèdre. On construit déjà des garde-robes en cèdre pour protéger les vêtements des insectes et de la moisissure.

 

Le Phénol a la propriété de tuer des bactéries, les champignons ainsi que d'éloigner les insectes. En grande concentration, c'est un produit très toxique pour nous ou tout être vivant. (J'ai déjà été évacué d'un laboratoire où il y avait eu un déversement de Phénol!) 

 

Lorsque l'on garde un petit animal sur cette litière, le phénol ne fait pas seulement rendre son environnement plus propre mais l'empoisonne à petit feu. Les cellules de ses poumons sont attaquées et meurent tranquillement lui procurant une espérance de vie plus courte. Il peut aussi y avoir des cas d'allergie sévère chez certains rongeurs. Le foie va aussi être attaqué puisque celui-ci travaille à filtrer les poisons de notre sang.

 

Pourquoi y en a-t-il encore dans les animaleries? Pour l'argent évidament! Je suppose qu'ils font beaucoup plus de profits sur le cèdre que sur le tremble ou la raffle de maïs. Ou tout simplement parce que ça se vend bien. Ça sent peut-être bon, mais viveriez-vous dans une maison faites en panneaux de cèdre? Si votre rongeur sent trop mauvais, changer sa litière plus souvent!

 

Litière à chat régulière

Celle-ci contient des argiles pouvant être nocives pour les petits rongeurs. La poussière d'argile peut cause un ciment dans les poumons des animaux ou peut même obstruer leur voie digestive.

 

Rien

Ne rien mettre n'est guère mieux! Le contact prolongé de leurs pattes sur leur urine et leur excrément va créer des infections à long terme. Deplus, les bactéries vont proliférer rapidement dans ce milieu humide. Le seul cas où il est possible de ne rien mettre à vos gerbilles est dans les cas d'allergies. Si vous tentez d'identifier la source de son allergie, il est possible de la mettre dans un habitat sans litière pour savoir si l'allergie est dû à la litière ou à quelque chose dans l'air de la pièce. Il faudra alors nettoyer régulièrement le font de son habitat.
